Councillor Reports at November’s Chislet Parish Council Meeting

Canterbury City Councillor Rachel Carnac and Kent County Councillor Alan Marsh attended Chislet Parish Council meeting on 17th November at Hersden Community Centre.

Councillor Carnac told the meeting about:

  • Canterbury district electoral ward boundary review

The Local Government Boundary Commission’s is reviewing ward boundaries in Canterbury district due to changing demographics. The review aims to adjust ward boundaries so that each Canterbury City Councillor represents roughly the same number of voters. New development in some areas has led to more voters living in some wards. The review aims to even the situation out.

Members of the public are invited to comment on:

  • where ward boundaries should be
  • where people who live near you access facilities, like shops and leisure
  • which areas you identify as your local community

The consultation on electoral boundaries runs until 4 December and is available via the Local Government Boundary Commission website http://lgbce.org.uk

  • Attempts to improve recycling rates by Canterbury City Council

CCC hopes to improve recycling rates by clamping down on people putting items in the wrong recycling bin. Canenco crews will put stickers on all recycling and general waste bins to remind residents what can and can’t be placed in each bin. After this, crews will check bins for contamination and will not collect any bin with the wrong items in it. They will instead place a hanger on your bin telling you what to do next.

Residents should have already received a leaflet explaining the changes. Anyone who need any help with the changes should contact Cllr Carnac on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

  • Biodiversity emergency

In October Canterbury City Councillors declared a biodiversity emergency in an unanimous and cross-party vote.

The declaration aims to give greater protection to our natural environment and set an important precedent for other councils across Kent. The council is now working to produce a Biodiversity Action Plan for the district. For more information contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Kent County Councillor Alan Marsh told the meeting:

  • Street lights not working?

Cllr Marsh asked parishioners to notify him about any defective street lights at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., rather than reporting them to Canterbury City Council.

  • Canterbury City council Budget consultation

Cllr Marsh highlighted the increase in parking charges proposed in the CCC budget, which would see increases in charges particularly Herne Bay and Whitstable.

He urged any concerned parishioners to respond to the consultation which runs from Monday 13 November to close of business on Monday 8 January. The consultation can be found on Canterbury City Council’s website Proposed changes to charges and conditions in council car parks - Canterbury Newsroom

  • KCC Finances

Cllr Marsh said that KCC faces a difficult financial situation and had yet to complete its budget. Cllr Marsh said he had attended a full council meeting on 16th November where the situation had been discussed. Parishioners could watch the webcast of the meeting on the KCC website if they wanted to follow the discussion.

  • Waste collection centres

Cllr Marsh said that nothing had been decided about the future of KCC waste collection centres. A consultation on their future had been delayed but was not totally off the agenda, he said.
